Interviewed Anna Deavere Smith yesterday in between the matinee and evening performance of her one-woman show at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

In the 20 years I’ve been interviewing notables, I’ve never run across someone who didn’t want to shake hands, hug [“Doctor’s orders”], nor have their picture taken [for my own personal use]. I don’t know the reason for the latter, as she looked great decked out in attractive makeup and a cute casual outfit.

After the interview, I saw her enlightening show then proceeded backstage to try again. I thought she might have a change of heart once she was finished with her performance. When I saw Anna, I congratulated her and asked again to have a picture taken together. She still refused, I didn’t insist, but she felt the need to stick the stage manager on me, who was polite about it.

I was told explicitly that the interview was to last for

30 minutes; Elizabeth and I spoke for 2 hours.

The last question I asked Elizabeth was: Name one word to describe yourself.

She answered, "Survivor."

Topic: Publicists

Granted, like anything else in life, there are good ones and there are bad ones. Some are devil incarnate; others are angels from above. I've dealt with both. Some of the angels include: Dale Olson, Richard Hoffman, and Steve Sauer. I won't mention the others! Most of them fall in between.

1] I never understood the limited thinking of just pushing a celebrity and their product [ie., a film, a book, etc.] only when it is released. That makes no sense to me. You mean they aren't going to make any sales after the launch?! Ridiculous. That's when they'll need it more!

2] "'So and So' has nothing to push now. Let's wait till they do." I hear this constantly from publicists. Again, limited thinking. Okay, I understand the celebrity might be tired or whatever. I get it. So just say that. But publicity is publicity! No matter when! Waiting to do the interview to promote something, lessens their credibility. If the public sees they are willing to do the interview without anything in it for them, they draw more fans in arguably, especially in A&U magazine, a nonprofit, where our focus is HIV/AIDS.

I was living on Ohio Avenue in Westwood, not far from UCLA and was returning home from dinner with a new beau, a British lad -- as was Lennon -- when Mike and I heard it announced on the car radio. I became numb and for the rest of the evening we talked about not only the shocking news, but how John's life had positively affected us.

Interviewed Spiritualist, Louise Hay, in her lovely home in San Diego located directly across from Balboa Park. In the mid-80s Louise stepped forward to help the AIDS community and held uplifting weekly meetings where close to a thousand were in attendance. With her gentle way she provided hope and inspiration to those who were stigmatized as outcasts. These meetings were eventually coined, Hay Rides.

Being an I Love Lucy fanatic, I went crazy when I knew I was going to interview Marion Strong....er....I mean the actress who played her --- Shirley Mitchell!

She was everything I had hoped and more. This character actress has performed in practically every trendsetting TV show in the 50s, 60, and 70s -- and at 90 years young, she is still auditioning. You go, Sister!

Kelly, Terry [our cameraman], and I spent a delightful afternoon with Shirley at her Westwood Los Angeles condo.

Yes, that is a REAL Oscar, bestowed on her late husband, Jay Livingston, who was the voice of Mister Ed and a songwriter. He won 3 Academy Awards; this one is for "Buttons and Bows." He also wrote "Que Sera Sera," "Mona Lisa," "Tammy," and "Silver Bells" to name a mere few.

She lives in Glendale and is a member of 3 Peaks 3 Weeks Challenge, an annual all-female fundraiser to provide awareness in Africa for three peak issues: environment, education, and health. Funds raised will provide financial support for African grassroots organizations.

Jeanne departs in a few days to start her journey where she’ll summit Mt. Kenya, Mt. Meru, and Mt. Kilimanjaro. YES! You go, girl!

Me and my old pal, Gorby

Well, not really! On our way back to the States from Germany, who's on our first leg of the flight from Berlin to Munich -- Yep, Mikhail Gorbachev.

Davidd and I had arrived at the airport early and were sitting near the gate, which was a very small area. It was 20 minutes before boarding and people were beginning to mill around. We were talking and I noticed about 5 people coming through the crowd to the front led by a female Lufthansa employee. I glanced over and did a double take when I saw him. My mouth fell open and I said to Davidd, "OH MY GOD, It's Gorbachev. It's Gorbachev."

Over the past few days he had been blasted all over the media in Berlin since he was there for the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall. Feeling slightly intimidated, yet elated, I whispered to Davidd, even though I knew the answer, "Do you think I should ask to have my picture taken with him?" Davidd replied with a shrug, "Do what you want. You're going to do it anyway."

I thought for a couple seconds, stood up, and walked over to his small entourage. I usually don't like to bother notables when they are in public as I feel it is an intrusion. But I knew I would never have another opportunity like this! I approached this tall guy and a platinum-haired woman, who looked like a cross between Bette Midler and Carol Burnett. It must have been his personal assistant. Gorbachev had his back toward me. I inquired, "Hi. I'd like to ask Mr. Gorbachev if he'd mind if I get my picture taken with him." The guy spoke to me in German and the woman replied, "Oh, I'm so sorry, but he's had ten-thousand photographs taken this week and I'm sure he doesn't feel like it. I'm so sorry." She kept apologizing. I added, "I'm from Los Angeles...." She apologized again. Then she turned toward him, his back still toward me, and spoke to him in Russian. I heard the words, "Los Angeles." He turned to me, looked into my eyes, said a few words in Russian [probably, "nice to meet you"] and extended his hand. I smiled, nodded, and put my hand in his. I gave the woman my camera. She asked how to operate it, I quickly showed her which button to push and she snapped. Whew. I did it! Gorbachev let go of my hand and turned away from me. Wait. The flash didn't go off. Fuck.

The empathetic airline gal looked over and said, "Oh, the flash didn't go off. Will it be alright?" Had she not said that I might not have gotten another pic, as I felt I was intruding. Well, no, I probably would have!

"Oh, would you mind taking another one?" I pleaded with the personal assistant. After a minimal frown, she did. She said something to Gorbachev, he turned back around, I put my arm over his shoulders, and the photo was taken. That's the one you see above [notice "Berlin" written on a plane between me and Gorbachev through the window]. I said, Thank You, and walked back to my seat. I was flying! Davidd said, "Good for you!!"

Within a few minutes, Gorbachev entered the small plane. He sat in the business section which consisted of 6 rows and we sat 2 rows behind him in coach. He was sitting next to the window and the assistant was sitting in the aisle with one seat between them. When I passed him on my way to my seat, I said to the assistant, "Excuse me. Being one of the first people on the plane, it was entertaining to watch passengers gasp and gaze as they passed him. One German woman, as she passed me, widened her eyes and smiled then took another look at Gorbachev. During the flight, this woman's son, who was in his mid to late 30s, approached Gorbachev's row. He was there for a minute talking to the assistant when Gorbachev looked up. The guy pointed to Gorbachev then to himself then to the camera. He was denied.

I feel honored that I was granted the photograph.

And as Davidd summed up, "This is the most important person in the world that you have ever met, Dann." Indeed. [Picture below is the first shot I got.]

I'm still traveling aboard. Currently in cold and rainy [even snowy] Berlin amidst the excitement of "The Fall of the Wall -- 20 years", which takes place on Monday, 9th November. Was staying at the Adlon Kempinski just feet away from the Brandenburg Gate, now presently at the Ritz-Carlton in Potsdamer Platz, across the street from the bustling Sony Center.

Berlin is my last stop after having visited Munich, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Koln, Heidelberg, and Duesseldorf. Gatherng some intriguing and informative stories....

Pieter has been an AIDS activist from Day One and even travels around his homeland of South Africa carrying a dildo to schools teaching kids how to have sex properly. Yeah, Pieter! We need more like you . . .

I will interview Pieter once I’m back from my trip.

GERMANY JOURNEY

For the month of October I will be traveling as a guest of the German Tourist Board gathering stories that come my way in Munich, Stuttgart, Heidelberg [pic below], Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Berlin. One story will be with Michael Lohaus, the head of the Gay Games, which will take place in 2010, and a physician in Berlin who is on the cutting edge of the AIDS epidemic.

Fortunately, I will be in Berlin for the 20^th Anniversary of the Fall of the Wall. Unbelievable to think that it has been that long . . .

ONE MONTH BEFORE THE WALL FELL I was in Berlin, staying at The Grand Hotel on the East Side, feet away from the Brandenburg Gate. Little did I know when I returned to LA, that the cement would crumble into a gillion pieces!

While there in Berlin in 1989, I met a fascinating guy, Normie, in a Dance Club who was raised under Communist rule. I befriended him and, luckily, he drove us around the East taking us to his home in Caputh, where his family owned The Ferry House Restaurant located on a lake where ferry boats crossed. He also showed us Einstein’s summer home in Caputh and drove us nearby to Potsdam at the Cecilienhof Manor [former home of Crown Prince William and his wife, Cecile] where the WW2 conference was held with Churchill, Truman, and Stalin.

We also got to tour Schloss [Palace] Sans Souci, the summer residence of Frederick The Great in the 18th Century. It’s rumored that amidst his lavishly vast tree-populated landscape that he would have naked parties with boys and play hide and seek. Hmmm, I wonder if I hadn't been there in a former life!

It’s nice to report that Normie and I are still friends and that we'll partake in the "Fall of the Wall" anniversary festivities together.

UPSTANDING, NOT SIDEWAYS!

Interviewed VIRGINIA MADSEN several days ago at her hillside home near Thousand Oaks. Not to kiss her ass, but she certainly looks much younger in person! Her hair is naturally blonde, but currently brown due to just finishing up her latest film with Kevin Spacey, Father of Invention.

Honestly, I never really paid much attention to Virginia as an actress until Sideways rolled ‘round. From then on, I was captured. What a tender, moving performance she gives as waitress cum horticulturist, Maya.

Virginia is a proud mom of fifteen year old, Jack, who we met that day, and his father is Antonio Sabato, Jr. Virginia has been very upfront with Jack about HIV/AIDS and they both are active in Elizabeth Glaser’s Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Virginia explained the backstory to photograph below. This was their first scene on the production in the rolling hills of Santa Ynez mountains [California wine country] and not far from Michael Jackson’s Neverland. Alexander Payne, the director and then husband of Sandra Oh, gave them a picnic basket with a bottle of wine inside. “Go over there,” he said, pointing to an area near a tree. Abound with curiosity, all four actors do so. They walk quite a distance, far from Alexander and the cameras. Sitting, they all kind’a look at one another, like “What do we do now?” Sandra cups her hands around her mouth to make a megaphone and yells, “Do we start eating?” “YES!” yells Alexander. They grab a couple sandwiches, but still not sure what to do. Then they eye the bottle of wine. Sandra yells out once again, “ Do we drink the wine??” Alexander responds in slow cadence, “ Yes….drink…the…wine…and…have….a…picnic!” They did.

When I show Virginia this photograph during the interview she smiles, chuckles and says, “We all were so happy.” Then she adds, “We were all toasting because we were employed.”

At the end of our interview, Virginia gave us a “Hitching Post” bottle of wine that was given to her on the Sideways set. They filmed several scenes in the Hitching Post restaurant located just outside of Solvang, California.

Virginia will either be our December or January cover. Don't miss this one! She says some very provocative, interesting, and profound words . . .

I’m proud to say that I am from the Kennedy era.

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy is forever etched in my memory. It is one of those incidents that happen during one’s lifetime, like 9/11 or the moon landing, that you know EXACTLY where you were and how you felt. I was glued to the TV from my living room in Grove City, Ohio, watching the funeral procession march down Pennsylvania Avenue. And there was John-John dressed in his ‘little man’ suit saluting his slain father.

I can recall when ALL magazines on the newsstands, including movie mags like Photoplay and Modern Screen – before People magazine, if you can believe that! – were splashed with Jacqueline Kennedy’s elegant face.

I remember when Robert Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles; I remember when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started the Special Olympics; I remember when John Kennedy Jr.’s plane crashed to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The Kennedy Dynasty has shadowed my entire life.

As a journalist, the closet I’ve come to interviewing a Kennedy clan has been Bobby Shriver, Eunice’s son; Maria’s brother. Bobby started the RED campaign with Bono.

I admired Ted Kennedy’s positive attitude and his zest for life. In his last testament he stated he wanted a “Celebration of Life.” When I depart this earth, I request the same. I want nobody crying at my death. I lived a full, vivacious life – celebrate for me -- because I’m finally outta here and have peace!

It remains to be determined if anyone from the Kennedy camp will emerge and take over the torch. I hope so . . .

I paid a home-visit to a Hero today. That is, Ando from NBCs series, Heros, JAMES KYSON LEE. Not only has he made a PSA for the Banyan Tree Project, but he's also involved with other charities as well. "Anytime I'm needed for an AIDS benefit, I go," he says. I guess the AIDS community certainly has a hero in James. Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team [APAIT] recently bestowed upon him their "Unsung Hero" award.

Yesterday, I had the extreme pleasure of spending the day with "the greatest playwright of the last century" [Time magazine]. I interviewed Athol Fugard at the The Fountain Theatre then saw the matinee of the West Coast premiere of his newest play, Coming Home. Fugard is probably best known for Master Harold .... and The Boys, which starred a young Matthew Broderick [it's currently being turned into another film] and the 2005 Academy Award winning, Tsotsi. After the production of Coming Home there was a Q&A with Fugard, which was quite moving, as is the play itself.

HOWARD ROSENMAN:

The the face of a man who has lost over 2000 people to AIDS and has attended over 50 memorials.

I interviewed Howard Rosenman yesterday at his home in West Hollywood. Howard is the producer of such films as The Family Man, The Celluoid Closet, Paragraph 175, The Main Event, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the stunning, Resurrection with Ellen Burstyn, and he won an Academy Award for Common Threads.

Howard was one of the founders of Project Angel Food and in the early shades of the epidemic, helped create a space at Cedars-Sinai for PWAs and their families to congregate, and has served on several AIDS organization boards throughout the years.

Howard's only acting job to date has been playing Advocate publisher,

David Goodstein in this year's hit, MILK.

NEVERLAND NEVERENDING

Last week while watching Larry King Live broadcast from Michael Jackson's Neverland, I reminisced about my trip there -- only to the gates!! -- two years ago. My friend, Jimmy and I were on a get-a-way trip to Solvang and decided to tour the Sideways location shots. As we lunched at one of the sites, The Los Olivos Cafe where Jack [Thomas Hayden Church] asks Miles [Paul Giamatti], "Did you drink and dial?," we decided to be more adventurous and find Neverland. We asked a real estate agent for directions and learned that it was a mere five miles from The Los Olivos Cafe. It was a stunning drive and what a tranquil region. To say that this area of the Santa Ynez mountains is exquisitely beautiful is such an understatement.

We hung out there for a half an hour and just fantasized what it was like inside, and what it would have been like to be a guest there.

Oh, how I wished I could have interviewed Michael at Neverland!

Ever since my college days, when I read Piers Paul Read's captivating 1974 book on the 1972 plane crash in the Andes mountains, I've been obsessed with the terrifying story and totally inspired by the survivor's enduring human spirit.

When I saw the spellbinding 1993 film, taken from Read's book starring Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, Jack Noseworthy, and Josh Hamilton, I wanted more! Then came a documentary in 1993 [20 years later] narrated by Martin Sheen, a few books written by the survivors after the turn of the century and now a NEW documentary [35 years later] called, STRANDED. Though I have some strong criticisms about the film -- simple things that would have made the film much easier to understand -- I highly recommend it.

This blog has more of a professional slant, but every once in a while my personal feelings seep in -- and why not?!

With all this recent discussion about gay marriage and gay adopting, I want to put my two cents in.

What hetero character in what movie said, “It’s okay if gays want to marry. Let them be as miserable as us.” Outside the legal and tax benefits, I just don’t get why people want to marry. Do they really need that piece of paper to validate their love? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for equal rights, diversity, and letting people do whatever makes them happy. I’m even up for celebrating love. But marriage? No.

In Michael Liberatore’s recent article he busts the myths of marriage. It can be found in the 24^th February issue of Frontiers magazine. It’s called, “We desperately want what we haven’t got. But is what we haven’t got really worth getting?”

Why people insist on having biological kids today makes no sense to me. It’s such an ego-satisfying, selfish act. There are ALREADY too many unwanted kids. Adopt, people, adopt!

I consider parenting THE most important ‘job’ in the world. I only wish some parents looked at it that way. Too many parents don’t know how to parent and we are raising idiots. In the ideal world, I’d have people take a state board exam to get licensed to become parents.

For me, what makes me happy is no marriage and no children. There's my 2 cents worth.

Interviewed Cameron Carpenter last week and I'm still convinced that he's Karen Carpenter's secret love-child. The man has talent galore. Think Liberace with a twist of Rudolf Nureyev and pepper in some kd lang.

Presently traveling worldwide, Cameron is packing theatres with his concerts. Catch this man if he comes near you. You'll be delightfully entertained and have a cherished memory. His recent CD release, Revolutionary has been nominated for a Grammy.

I enjoyed our interview, Cameron. It was nice to be "Close To You..."

I could not contain my tears of joy today watching the Inauguration of President Obama.

Like this pic of him taken in Hawaii over the holidays, he’s a natural man. Everyman. As he takes office, a new world rises. Here’s to a New You.

This President is a hugger [how refreshing!], goes shirtless, has rhythm, and is a writer.

And to think I 'discovered' him in 2004 when he gave that rousing, dynamic speech at the DNC. At least I felt like I did! Nobody I knew had ever heard of this man. Who WAS this beacon?! I certainly took note. He had my full attention, and still does.

And to think two years ago I came 'this close' to an interview with him . . . However, I won't give up hope for an interview in the near future. He wouldn't.

I so want to interview Seth MacFarlane. What a creative mind. Unfortunately, I just learned about Family Guy last year, but I’m seriously catching up by watching reruns now. For me, the laughs are nonstop. The show is so F**ckin' Funny. In fact, in the theme song, doesn’t Stewie sing, “F’n cry” meaning Fuckin’ Cry?!

OFF MY CHEST / OFF HER CHEST

This past week I interviewed the delightful Aurora Adams that I met on the HIV-positive Caribbean Cruise in October. Observing her in the ship’s chapel one evening at the Memorial Celebration of those who died, I KNEW she’d make a great story.

Not to give too much away [the article comes out in February], Aurora’s dream will soon be granted. Born a boy, in a few weeks, Aurora will finally feel complete when she becomes a woman.

You go, Girl!

On another subject, I have wanted to write this for some time…... I am NOT a fan of reality shows. First off, the name is a misnomer. Once a camera is placed in front of a non-actor, reality is gone, and they become actors. True “Reality Shows” are shows like the classic Candid Camera where a camera is placed without the knowledge of the person. Thus, these so-called reality shows should be titled: Fake Shows or Unreality Shows or better yet,

“Look How I Act in Front of a Camera.”

And yet on another topic…..In today’s Sunday LA Times, there’s an excellent cover story in the Calendar section about the recent critic replacement for Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper on At The Movies. His name is Ben Lyons, the son of famous critic Jeffrey Lyons. The other replacement is TCMs Ben Mankiewicz. It should be called “The Two Ben’s Show.”

Mankiewicz is savvy, experienced, and intelligent. I can’t say the same about Lyons, who's also arrogant, vacuous, and obnoxious. Lyons is certainly a disgrace to the captivating originals, Siskel and Ebert.

Yep, that dynamic duo made a rare appearance together at their agent’s holiday party today in the mid-Wilshire neighborhood.

Dann & Kelly have recently reunited after a couple of years of pursuing other avenues. They’ve been with Won and Alan at Mademoiselle for over 5 years and they look forward to continuing their relationship.

After the first of the year, the duo will be back into full swing as MCs of various functions and events and hosting various gigs.

Yep, in the more than 15 years I’ve been interviewing, I’ve never had to cancel an appointment…..

UNTIL NOW. Damnit!

But when I do it, I do it up BIG.

I had to cancel two:

the bewitching SIGOURNEY WEAVER and the iconic ANN-MARGRET.

YES! FUCK!

I hope once I’m well enough from this chest/congestion/cold/sore throat/fever/COUGH, that I can tackle them again. My fingers are crossed.

In the meantime, during my convalescence, I’ll have to be satisfied watching my FAVORITE show -- the only show I watch faithfully -- The People’s Court with the uber-judge, MARILYN “stick-a-fork-in-me-I’m-done” MILIAN. I interviewed her a few years ago. Take a look:

How can you not love Jason Mewes?!

He’s funny, outrageous, charming, no bullshit kind’a guy, polite and, yes, very cute.

The star of such landmark films as The Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob and the current, Zack and Miri Make a Porno [he steals the film and, in it, even bears it all], the man in REAL life has been on a curvy and taxing journey.

I had the opportunity to spend a couple hours with Jason today at his home in the San Fernando Valley for an article I’m writing about him, his career, and his mother, Gayle, who died from AIDS. It will be published in A&U magazine and the reader will be surprised at some of Jason’s candid responses.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Been sick with a cold the past week, so I’ve had time to think about interviews that got away – people I would have liked to interview.

Top on the list is Karen Carpenter. When everyone was into the Rolling Stones in the late 60s, early 70s, I was crooning with The Carpenters. At times I was slightly embarrassed to admit it because others would poke fun and call ya ‘white bread’ or ‘uncool.’ Today I’m proud of it! Karen was such a talent and had the voice of -- I know its cliché -- but an angel. She was pitch-perfect and sang with such clarity. When I hear her songs played now, I get chills.

In the late 80s they made a TV movie about her life. Cynthia Gibb played Karen and Mitch Anderson played Richard. Louise Fletcher played their mother. I hope they release it on DVD. I’d like to see it again.

This is the quintessential Christmas album ever!

Over the past couple of years I’ve pursued an interview with Richard, but I was told that he does not do interviews any longer.
